Denmark to stop EU funding for federations that allow Russian athletes

The EU must not allow sports federations that allow Russian athletes to receive EU funding, the letter states.

If sports federations allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in international competitions, the federation shall not be eligible for EU support.

That's the message of a letter sent by Denmark and eight other EU countries to EU sports commissioner Glenn Micallef.

This is according to a press release from the Ministry of Culture.

"I am deeply concerned that Russian athletes can again be allowed to participate in international competitions," said Minister of Culture Zenia Stampe (R).

- It is absurd that a Russian can get a gold medal around his neck, all the while the bombs rain down on Ukraine. It's not to be carried.

The announcement comes in the wake of the recent suspension of the International Olympic Committee (IOCs) temporarily lifting a suspension of Russia's Olympic Committee.

The Russian Olympic Committee had been excluded by the IOC since October 2023 because the Russians had incorporated the four occupied Ukrainian provinces of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizjzja and Kherson into their National Olympic Committee.

Russia has now looped this, and therefore the IOC has lifted the exclusion of the country's Olympic Committee.

Also, the International Swimming Federation, the World Aquatics, has lifted all restrictions against Russian and Belarusian athletes so they can again take part during their own flag in rallies organized by the federation.

"I will do everything I can to fight against the growing trend of incorporating Russia into international sport," Zenia Stampe said in a statement.
